When Will I learn ✂ ✂ ✂ ✂ ?

February 22, 2011

Today is CLEANING OUT THE CLOSET on FTLOB...so I am reaching in the back of my "not-so-fond-memory" closet, and pulling out a little confession.  We are supposed to learn from our mistakes, but clearly I am a slow learner!

When I was in eighth grade, I decided one night to cut my hair!  I remember going into the bathroom, closing the door, and using my mother's scissors to "trim" my bangs.  With each snip, I could hear a voice inside of my head telling me this was a BAD idea!

I snipped from left to right, and evened them out from right to left...then left to right and right to left.  With each clip I watched my bangs get shorter and shorter...
...then just as quickly as I had thought of this stupid crazy dumb idiotic BRILLIANT idea, I was looking into the mirror with bangs about 3/4 of an inch long!  HOLY SH*T!!  What had I done?  Thankfully my mother was not home at the time.  I remember thinking that maybe they would grow before she got back in an hour!  Maybe she wouldn't notice!  Maybe lightening would strike me while I was in bed and I could say the burns caused the loss of hair!
My only option was to open the door and show my older sister what I had done, and hope she would be understanding...and help me figure something out!  I knew she was going to laugh, and I knew she was going to tease me...but I wondered if she would find it in her heart and help me fix this mess I had created.  Slowly, I opened the door and stood there in front of her...
After crying about how I was just trying to make them even, and they just kept getting shorter...My sister continued stopped laughing, and said she would try to help me fix it.  She went and found my mom's thinning-shears, and we went back into the crime scene bathroom.  To make a long and painful story short yet still painful...my sister decided the best thing would be to take the top half of my hair and bring it forward...cut new bangs and have them hide the short ones...this was a great idea, in theory.

That inner-voice once again started yelling speaking to me...
  1. Did my sister have any HAIRCUTTING EXPERIENCE!
  2. How was I going to keep the hair forward?
  3. Is it really best to cut more hair when you have already cut too much hair?
I once again decided not to listen the inner-voice...I told it to be quiet and mind it's own business!

My sister began to sculpt my new hairstyle...she snipped here and there, she thinned here and there.  She snipped and thinned...thinned and snipped!  Finally, I was able to look in the mirror.  It was not bad at all!  Yes, I had a few more bangs than before, but they covered the previous mess quite well.  I didn't know how to thank my sister...she had truly saved me from eighth-grade-teasing-hell!  Nobody would notice anything was different from the previous week at school...

Fast forward twenty-two years, and I once again am sporting bangs.  So you would think I would have remembered the story I just told you about, and I would take advantage of my salon's FREE BANG TRIMS (no appointment necessary!).  However, this morning I decided it would be a smart idea to trim my own bangs...

I took my scissors and started snipping left to right, right to left, etc.  I had done it, I had evened..WAIT, that looks a little crooked...I will just snip a little on the left, there that's perfect!  WAIT, I missed a spot...just a little snip and...NO, a little on the right...maybe a little more on the left...I think that will do...just one more snip...and done!

Remember in the back of Glamour magazine the Dos and Don'ts segment?

Well...I think I have a new entry!

QUESTION...DO YOU CUT YOUR OWN HAIR OR YOUR FAMILY'S HAIR?

I did have lots of hair cutting experience when I helped you fix your hair...I used to practice on the cat. Ask mom, she will tell you. I recently went back to bangs...and I did it all by myself and they look perfect. I would be more than happy to cut your hair when visiting this summer...I need to get back at you for trying to fringe the side of my hair right after I had surgery. I do believe I might have ripped open my internal stitches from laughing!

Oh this brings back so many painful (and classy school picture)memories! To this day I've never learned this either-especially when a stylist misses a section or makes the style a little off your fingers itch to fix it. Growing up, my mother was a hairstylist and would fix our bangs if we 'experimented' and gave us the biggest grief afterward. I feel the pain, and thank god hair grows fast!

DOH! Yah... I did that more times in my childhood than I care to mention - I never learned. I finally did away with the bangs. Too tempting for me to try and trim them on my own!

I let your sister bleach my hair blonde and cut it super short once, I think we had been drinking. If I recall correctly, it looked okay, but then again...drinking.

No way, no how! I am just not that talented. I could give someone a buzz cut, sure, but that's where my skills end. My husband's mom used to cut his hair when he was a kid and I think he's still scarred from it. Picture a bowl going over his head and scissors moving around the edge of the bowl. Nothing good can come of that!

hahaha!!! Oh no!! I don't cut my own or anybody else's. I'm a salon girl all the way. We DID used to army-buzz our boys. BUt daddy cut #1's ear and had NO sympathy for the little dude. That was the last time I allowed it to happen, and anytime he suggests otherwise, I cruely remind him of the error of his ways!

hahaha... oh we had one of these experiences when we were little too... But I decided I wanted to cut my sisters hair... and her being the "little sister" ... she had no say in it... I decided to make her into a little "Troll" and take a big chunk from the top and front and just CHOP.. ooops. :) That's why SHE is the hair stylist today and I'm not hehe

ahahahaa! She 'used to practice on the cat'... I almost peed my pants when I read that! In sixth grade my hair was pulled back in a ponytail and I had a "bump" that kept sticking up, so I cut it. Problem was, the bump was on the crown of my head, so I ended up with a bald spot.
My sister is a stylist. A blessing now, but believe me...when she was still in school the hairstyles I was given weren't pretty. There was the time I let her talk me into a perm and a 'bi-level" cut. I looked like a poodle. Luckily, I was 13 and in that awkward stage.

I have gotten quite good a cutting my own bangs. But I admit it took a lot of practice and quite a few mistakes along the way.

Yup I buzz too and have been known to cut my own hair. You see, I have thick, curly Italian hair that is very hard to screw up so if I'm feeling lazy and don't want to get it cut chop, chop!

Thanks for joining our hop on Mommys Online Garage Sale and adding our button to your marquee, hope to see you again next week.

Just hopped over from FTLOB and found this story to be completely hilarious :) Trust me, I needed a laugh today. Thank you for generously providing me with several of them.

It makes me breathe heavy just thinking about cutting my own hair. I become a nervous wreck. Scott wanted me to trim up the back of his neck once and I freaked out.

Throw the scissors out! LOL

I've never cut my own hair but my hair-related when will I ever learn moment does involve bangs.

You see, I have a really bad cowlick (I got off easy, my sister has 2!) which prevent me from having fringe bangs but several times in my life I have decided to try them thinking I will have different results, yet each time I have a giant piece of hair sticking up in the air!

When will I learn? :)

Love it! Almost every little girl has tried to cut her hair at one time or other. :-)

I always cut my husband's hair, with the clippers, no scissors involved. It is a great way to save money. He cuts our son's hair. I could do it, but the little guy is only three and still sobs throughout the haircut, so I would probably be crying too if I had to cut his hair. :-(

This post has me laughing out loud, seriously! I can picture your sister trying to fix your bangs by cutting more and more of your hair, hahaha.

Thanks for joining our I love blogging Wednesday hop!

I cut my hair once. My freshman year of high school. Because, that seems to be the best time to change your look.

Did you ever watch 90210? Well. In the whole opening credits to the show, there's a part where Brenda shows off her bad hair concoction. Yeah. Pretty much looked just like that. Only, maybe with more of the pom-pom look to my bangs...

This post made me laugh! I cut my son's hair, and occasionally my husband's if he needs a trim and doesn't have time to get it done elsewhere.

I found your blog in the Ontario Moms group on bloggymoms. Your newest follower!

A few years ago I used to cut my bangs all the time. And I don't know how I did it, but they looked good everytime. Well, school 2 years ago took up too much time so I just quit cutting my bangs. Grew them out, and didnt deal with them.
Ah. This past summer I thought I could pull out the siccors and cut my bangs the way I used to. And man was I so wrong.

I tried to do the side swept bangs, and by the time I was finished, I had side swept baby hairs, pointing up to the sky. It was terrible.

I invested in bobby pins, and ever day I would pin my hair back. But always had a few little pieces escaping and pointing up.

Again, I haven't cut my bangs since then. ha ha.

It seems like every kid has had one of those hair cutting experiences. What is it about hair that makes people want to do crazy things with it. And in large a person ends up doing something they regret!!!

I cut my own bangs all the time...sometimes it turns out better than other times. Sometimes I look like a little girl when I'm finished, too haha. I get too impatient to make it to the salon for a free bang trim.

Thankfully I never got interested in cutting my own hair...my BROTHER did shave HUGE patches off his bowl cut though...guess dad should have put the razor out of reach!

Following you from Bloggy Moms :)

I think we both have scissor issues:)
Even after countless hair disasters (notably the afro in Grade 3 and I'm a redhead) I still have the urge to trim "just a little" -- with whatever is available. Nail scissors, hacksaw...
At least when you're groaning and regretting, you'll know you're not alone.

Oh my goodness this made me laugh. I ALWAYS cut my own bangs. Each time I think I shouldn't, but they just seem to grow a lot faster than the rest of my hair, and who has time to make a trip to the stylist?? It's almost turned into a compulsion. Last time I went in to get my hair cut, the stylist said I was getting better at trimming my bangs...but I think she was just trying to be nice.
