The Anti-Hoarder

February 28, 2011

I assume you have watched the show Hoarders by now.  Anyone who has seen the show, usually says they go on extreme cleaning binges after watching it.
When watching the show Hoarders...the stories are almost always the same.  The problem seems to get worse over a period of time.  You will also notice that you never see a wife of a hockey player on the show.  Why?  Because we are never live in one place long enough to become hoarders!  In fact, I am waiting for the television show called
With a little over one month of the regular season, it is about this time I start becoming an anti-hoarder!  If it hasn't been used in the current hockey season, it is no longer needed.  I am looking forward to the cold and snow to disappear, so I can pack up the coats, boots, hats, gloves, etc...and put them in our storage unit for next year.  I start gathering the toys that my children have outgrown and prepare them for the donation bag.  McDonald's toys that have accumulated...gone!  I sort through drawers for clothes my children no longer wear and pass them on to younger children.  I pack winter clothes away...and donate items that I will no longer wear that have been hanging in my closet all season*.

*I usually keep a few items I no longer fit into, because one day...I like to think I will be able to wear them again!

Since we have TWICE purchased a home in our "hockey" city...and TWICE we have relocated after being in the home seven months...we currently rent a home while in our current city.  The home is partially furnished, so we have some furniture and personal items with us, while the rest of our belongings are in a storage unit.  I am always amazed how much crap stuff we accumulate each year.  If I were to keep everything...we would need an freight train to move all of our stuff.
Every April/May we pack up the things we won't need for the summer and store them....(we have yet to live in a home for a solid year).  We clean out all drawers, all cupboards, and closets .  We pack dishes, flatware, pots, pans, towels, sheets, etc for the next season.  We pack our cars with items we will need at the cottage, such as bikes, clothes, computers, etc....and head to our summer home.

Upon arriving home...we have to unload the cars, unpack our items and clean up a house that has sat empty for 9 months.  About the time we feel settled, it is almost time to pack up and close the house for the next hockey season.  Come the end of August, I sort through items that were not used, clothes that were outgrown, and household items we no longer need.  I store the summer things, and pack up items for the winter.  We load our cars...and off we go.

Moves per year = 2

13 homes in 12 cities in 14 years

14 years (multiplied) by 2 moves per year = 28 moves!
28 MOVES IN 14 YEARS!!!
Talk about WASH, RINSE and REPEAT!!

I am a little bit concerned that my daughter has become somewhat of a hoarder herself.  She has begun to "collect' everything...including:

and
Should I be worried?

Maybe there will be a show like this...

QUESTION...DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A HOARDER OR AN ANTI-HOARDER?

I LOVE the end of the season clean out. Can't start quite yet, it gets me too excited, haha. If any of us are great at packing and moving, you have to take top reign. I can't even imagine living in one place the whole year anymore. And I kinda like it that way :)

I'm definitely an anti-hoarder. I love a place for everything and everything in it's place. Constant battles are fought with my husband. Eh, maybe just minor skirmishes.

I moved at least once a year for about 8 years but when we bought our house in 2009, I swore I wasn't moving ever again.

I would say I'm on middle ground. I have stuff in storage, and I guess you could say my house is slightly cluttered right now. But I can't believe some of the stuff I've seen on that show!

I'm definitely an anti-hoarder! I loathe clutter and I like to regularly streamline our existing stuff (via trashing, donating and selling on Kijiji). That said, sometimes I develop and emotional or "I might use this later" attachment to things which really aren't important - so I need to work on this!

Great blog btw - love your writing style. Following you on GFC - feel free to check out my blog as well if you'd like!

Wow, I can't believe you moved so many times! We've been married almost 4 years and moved 4 times and I thought that was a lot. I always kind of welcome moving, really. It gives me motivation to clean things out and throw away stuff!

Most definitely an anti-hoarder, over the past couple of years I have moved a few times and you learn quickly what isn't used chuck it or donate out. This makes buying housewares and furniture kind of difficult but a good challenge.

Anti-Hoarder.

Actually, if I could be like an Uber Anti-Hoarder, I would. I moved around a lot as a kid. I'm not sure why, but I never held on to a lot of stuff. And so it's just a habit I've developed over the years and carried over into adulthood. Mr. BFG on the other hand...

By the way, thanks for the award! I've gotten it before, but I'll make sure to give you a shout-out tomorrow!

ANTIHOARDER here! I hate clutter and excess. Drives me absolutely insane. I've also learned that if I can survive for 6 months in Europe with what I can pack into one hockey bag (per person in our family), then I don't need more than that.

We have overtaken the third garage at my mom's house. And the storage shed. But we don't bring that stuff everywhere we go. It just stays, in boxes. And we travel with the minimum.

Always collect things along the way - especially Linden - but it's usually things we are comfortable leaving behind/donating when we go home.

I am quickly becoming an Anti-Hoarder as I am learning that less junk makes my life easier. It only took me packing up everything and moving one time to realize that we had too much crap!

I'm a semi-hoarder which means that they haven't yet reserved my spot on the show, but it's coming. Maybe there could be a show where the anti-hoarding hockey wives go to the homes of the hoarders and teach them how to do it right.

I'm a bit of both. Some things I hoard like magazines and cards. However some stuff I will just chuck (generally need to be in a claen out mood for that though).

I have to say, I am a bit of a hoarder of clothes tags- not just any though, generally ones that look a little fancy haha!! Oh and spare buttons (i have so many now that I just match them to things needed..i have enough of some that I can replace a whole set haha).

Oh dear....I am a fully fledged hoarder aren't I?!

Cute post! I am without a doubt a hoarder! I keep my tags too...and then finally about 6 months later get tired of them and throw them out. But I wouldn't mind keeping them if I had a cute box to put them in!

I'm a little of both but probably lean more towards hoarding if I am honest about it :)

It's funny, my two best friends both are children of hoarders and they definitely fall in the anti-hoarders category--guess they've seen enough to know they don't want to hold onto anything unnecessary!

That could be a show too: Children of Hoarders, sort of sounds like Children of the Corn...on second thought, maybe not...

I can't imagine moving that much! This one move I'm doing to Ireland has nearly KILLLLLLED me fo sho. I'd side on the anti-hoarders too though...I'm always cleaning and throwing things out.

I don't really want to admit it but I think I'm kind of an organized hoarder. I'm trying to do Spring cleaning but I might have ADD, lol!

moving 10 times in 9 years has totally convinced me that I can't follow in my hoarding parents' ways. I have to break all of the habits I learned from them growing up. What an incentive!
