I got Biebered...

March 15, 2011

Since I have a six year old daughter...it was going to happen sooner or later.  Sure we have the posters, the songs on the ipod, and even have some t-shirts.  But so far, we have avoided...
Yes, tonight I took my daughter to see Justin Bieber's movie!  Hold your applause, forget the balloons, and stop throwing confetti.  There comes a time when we as parents have to take one for the team!  Not that I am complaining...I have been known to sing a little "Baby, Baby, Baby OOOOOHHHH" and right now the chorus to "Never Say Never" keeps swirling through my head! (Are there other words to that song?)
There is no denying Justin Bieber is talented...and there is no denying that we are seeing the making of a new teen idol!  So tonight, as I sit to blog...I want to take a moment to go back in time and salute the teens idols of the past....

First there was Elvis, Fabian, and The Beatles!  Who can forget the images of screaming girls fans crying for their heartthrobs.  I can only wonder if my grandmother would have taken my mother to see Fabian (her idol) in his debut movie....
Soon came the next generation of teen heartthrobs....and girls were once again crippled with excitement and tears!

Donny Osmond, Leif Garrett, and David Cassidy graced the cover of Tiger Beat Magazine in the 1970's.  Posters were plastered on walls, girls were left sobbing in audiences, and every boy perfected their shaggy hairdos! (sound familiar?)
Suddenly it was the 1980s and my generation was more into actors than crooning boys in flared polyester pants...

Rick Schroder, Kirk Cameron, and Corey Haim to name just a few...I never missed an episode of Silver Spoons, and I am sure my husband wonders why I suddenly became obsessed with NYPD BLUE a few seasons back.

When it came to musical acts...I was a Culture Club fan!  I had these posters on my wall....

I am sure my mom would have welcomed this instead...

To show my love for my heartthrob...I was lucky to have had posters and maybe a pin on my denim jacket.  Now Bieber Fever (is that trademarked?) has taken over the consumer market...

So what exactly makes a girl go weak at the knees?

HAIR:

STYLE:

In the Bieber movie you watch (in 3D) as Justin goes from a cute kid in his mom's home videos...to a pop sensation who can sell out Madison Square Garden in 22 minutes.  Pretty impressive!

But there is a good chance Justin will not always be young and cute...just ask these guys!
(Although David Cassidy looks like he is trying every available surgery to try to stay young and cute!)

But I am sure my daughter will look at him through her six-year-old eyes...even when she is sixty-six

For now, my daughter will suffer from Bieber Fever

...and I will suffer from a little fever of my own!

I was a TOTAL NKOTB fan. My first concert? New Kids On The Block. (I can still do "The Right Stuff" dance & remember all the words to "Please Don't Go Girl". In fact - that last one brought me to tears when I heard it in concert. Pathetic right?

Do they have Bieber buttons? My older sister and I had these huuuuuuuuge buttons with the New Kids' faces plastered on them. T-shirts, hats, blankets, posters, you name it - we had it. I fluctuated from being in love with Jonathan to being in love with Joey... and then back to Jonathan. And my worst confession yet - I bought the Joey McIntyre album when he attempted to make a comeback. Remember that one??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-221CykxBXg omg...

Oh Kirk Cameron. Who didn't love us a little Tiger Beat back in the day. We'll just call your daughter a Belieber...this coming from a good friend who's 11 year old daughter is obsessed and has created 'born again beliebers' for her other siblings and parent (s). Hope you had sweet dreams of lofty hair and swift dance moves!

It's funny that you mention this today. I just finished (last night, in fact) reading I Think I Love You, by Allison Pearson. It's about a girl with an obscene crush on David Cassidy and while it was a tedious read (I don't like the way she writes), it is the exact same concept. And in the back there's an interview with Cassidy too...

Anyway. Tangent.

I wasn't ever really into that whole thing. The crying, screaming, oh em gee I can't live without (insert Teen Idol here). I dunno. I did love some NKOTB and Jason Bateman...swoon (my hubby looks almost exactly like him), though.

Love it! My room was filled with Corey Haim, Ricky Schroder, Michael Jackson, New Kids On the Block, George Strait, and Kirk Cameron. When I was older (like as an adult pre-marriage LOL) I had all kinds of pics of Lenny Kravitz. He is my "Sting".

Hahaha...I totally dreamt about Bieber ALL night!!! The movie wasn't o bad...but it went on FOREVER! Talk about Never say Never.....never ending that is!

I never was a cryer or screamer...

Jason Bateman was and IS so cute....I wonder if you marrying a look-alike is a subliminal thing????

funny, I keep hearing NKOB....???? I don't remember them too much? I do recall getting my ears pierced right when Michael Jackson's white glove was cool...because I remember wanting White glove earrings once my ears healed!

I am married and I still pine for Sting!!

Never did a pin-up wall of boys. The closest I came to that was tearing out a picture of Fred Savage to kiss goodnight after I got in bed and retrieved it from under the pillow. But before that... it was Bowie. Ah, that voice that is like hardened cashmere...and no, I'm not mistaken with that simile. It will always be Bowie for me.

I'm too embarrassed to admit my crush (small letters - please don't tell anyone - Cliff Richard - even though he was a lot older than the musicians I should have had crushes on) but I absolutely loved this post and it brought back some great memories. Your blog is brilliant and I am now your latest follower/admirer. (Just in case you think I'm some random stalker I'd better explain that I found you via the Tuesday Train hop.)
Warm wishes from a foggy UK...I guess that's fog if not my spectacles need cleaning again.

who did I love...who did I love...well, first it was Donnie (6yrs old), then it was Andy Gibb with his flowing locks and scarves. Hubba hubba. Then it was Rick Springfield. I loved me some Rick and can still belt out Jesse's Girl like nobody's business...then puberty hit and I loved Eddie VanHalen (i know, kinda gross), Jon BonJovi, Rob Lowe, Johnny Depp in the 21 Jump Street era, I had a weird obsession with Jennifer Connelly. I think I might have been slightly confused..it's all so weird. Then I grew up and loved Matthew McConaughey..even married a guy who looks like him (but with a penchant for 900 numbers), oh and Adam Graves. Loved Adam Graves in the early 90's/college years. Well, that should do it for No. 7...

The Duran Duran boys had to have been my prepubescent favorites, mostly Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. I had pictures of them plastered all over my wall.
That and Adam Ant, OMG I think that man CAUSED me to hit puberty just from his mere existence, soooo schmexy!

Well I hate to admit it but I loved David Cassidy. What was I thinking? But now that I am older and wiser I only have eyes for George Clooney . I don't know if he can sing but who cares.

Ha! Great post! I have always liked older men and my crush as a kid was Tom Selleck-Magnum PI. "Baby, baby, baby, oooohh" Had posters of him and only him all over my room. Now he is in Blue Bloods and he still makes my knees weak.

Where did all the comments go? Glad you asked! I have hidden them until Saturday!!! I might be making a guessing game for all of us to try to guess which blogger had a crush on which teen idol. Hurry and send me your teen idol so you can be part of this game. I will be setting it up so everyone who participate's will have a link from my blog!

Although I was a mere babe in the 70's, I do vaguely recall a fondness for the Partridge Family...wonder what that was about? Anyway, loved Michael Jackson before he got all gung ho for plastic surgery and I was absolutely fascinated with Boy George's androgyny. Also, and I'll deny this if you tell anyone, when Silver Spoons was on, I had a little thing for Alfonso Ribeiro. That was pre-Fresh Prince of Belair.

Oooh!! Although he died 10 years before I was born, I would HAVE to say Jim Morrison of The Doors. He was your typical moody, tortured artist, and was absolutely demented, but he had the bad boy appeal, as well as the Sex-God status....I tell my husband that he is LUCKY that the Lizard King is deceased, because if he were still alive, I would be all over that! Even though it would mean I would probably have to change his Depends and make sure he had his Geritol every day! :)

I'm your newest follower from the Thirsty Thursday Hop! Please stop by and follow back, if you'd like!

Have a great day!

I've been lucky enough to escape Beber fever with my seven year old. We don't really here her talking about him at all. Being male however and looking back at my teen years I'd have to say that Brooke Shields and Olivia Newton John would have to have been my teen idols back in the day.

I was IN LOVE with Jonathan Taylor Thomas (or JTT as my friends at Teen Beat and I liked to call him) You know..the middle son on Home Improvement. Oh em gee..that long shaggy hair and those baby blues. And that raspy voice...Oh my. Not to mention when he got a tad older and cut the hair and he was SMOKIN! You better believe my walls were covered with his smexy self. I never missed an episode of the show and I still have the season finales on videotape at my mom and dads HA!
